When should I go to avoid the crowds?
Visitor numbers rise from around midday, so early morning is best if you want to avoid the crowds. Just after the gates open at 6:30 it is relatively quiet and the atmosphere is fresh. The first ferry is at about 6:25.

Is there an illumination at night?
The shrine buildings and the great torii are lit up at night. The contrast between the setting sun and the torii is another popular sight.
How does the view change between high and low tide?
At high tide the shrine buildings appear to float on the sea, and the great torii gate stands in the water, a magical sight. At low tide the sand appears and you can walk right up to the foot of the torii. We recommend checking the tide table on the Miyajima Tourist Association website in advance.
