What is the connection with Takeda Shingen?
It is said that Takeda Shingen used the spring during the Warring States period to heal sword wounds received in his battles with Uesugi Kenshin, and records survive of a permit he issued to protect the spring. With about 1,300 years of history, it is known as Takeda Shingen's hidden bath.

What is a bath fed from beneath your feet?
It is a very unusual arrangement in which the spring water rises directly through the floor of the bath. Unlike an ordinary hot spring piped in from elsewhere, the water fills the bath exactly as it emerges from the source. Nothing is added: no water, no reheating, no recirculation, no disinfectant and no bath salts.
I heard the bath is mixed. Can women use it comfortably?
The main bath, the Kakushiyu Oiwa-buro, is mixed, but there are women-only times. Most guests come for a bathing cure, so the atmosphere does not suit people looking for a mixed bath as such. There are rules about bathing towels and wraps; please see the official website for details.
How hot is the spring?
The source temperature is about 30 degrees Celsius, a low-temperature spring. It is a simple spring (of the sodium and calcium sulphate and chloride type), said to help with post-operative wounds and injuries, and guests come from all over Japan for extended bathing cures. After soaking for a while the body warms up in a way that surprises many people.

Can I stay several nights for a bathing cure?
We actively welcome guests coming for a bathing cure. Plans range from room-only to two meals a day, and multi-night stays are catered for. Room-only plans start at 5,000 yen.

What is the food like?
We serve home-made dishes using local ingredients. The food is simple and warming, centred on seasonal vegetables and river fish as befits a bathing-cure inn. You can choose a plan with two meals or room only.

About 10 minutes' walk from Shimobe-Onsen Station on the JR Minobu Line (we can collect you from the station if you call ahead). About 50 minutes from Kofu-Minami IC on the Chuo Expressway via Route 52.
