How do I get there from Sendai Station?
From stand 8 in the bus pool at the west exit of JR Sendai Station, take the Miyagi Kotsu bus for Akiu Onsen, alight at the Akiu Onsen Yumoto stop and walk about 1 minute. By car it is about 30 minutes from Sendai Station, or about 15 minutes from Sendai-Minami IC on the Tohoku Expressway. A free shuttle bus (booking required) is also available.

Is there a free shuttle bus?
A free shuttle bus runs from the east exit of Sendai Station (booking required). Bookings are taken only through the Sakan shuttle bus booking page on the official website; we cannot take them by telephone.

There are 173 rooms in total: 128 Japanese-style, 7 Western-style, 35 Japanese-Western and 3 others. The 13-storey Hitenkaku wing also has lavish special rooms.

Tell me about the inn's history.
Sakan is the inn that keeps the original source of Akiu Onsen, and in the Tokugawa period it flourished as the bathing palace of Date Masamune, lord of the Sendai domain. In the main building a sacred flame brought from Mount Koya has burned for more than 400 years, and items connected with the Date family are on display.

Tell me about the baths.
You can go round four different baths, including the only open-air bath in Akiu Onsen where you look out over the Natori River while bathing in water fed continuously from the source. Akiu Onsen is one of the three imperial hot springs of Japan, with more than 1,500 years of history.

What is the food like?
The basis is Japanese set meals using carefully chosen ingredients sourced from across Japan. Breakfast is the Premium Morning, a buffet with a live kitchen where dishes are made in front of you. Seafood from the Sanriku coast is also popular.
Can you cater for food allergies?
For allergies to the seven designated allergens (egg, wheat, milk, buckwheat, peanut, crab and prawn) we recommend our low-allergen menu. For safety reasons we cannot accommodate allergies outside those seven, or changes to dishes for personal likes and dislikes.
