What kind of bath is Houshi-no-yu?

A Meiji-era (built 1895) blend of Japanese and Western-style bathhouse, registered as a tangible cultural property. Hot spring water naturally wells up from the rock base of the bath, and the water is so clear that the white pebbles at the bottom are visible. The charm lies in the Rokumeikan-style design with large Japanese cedar timber beams, timber walls of Japanese beech and oak, and a semicircular Western-style window.

Houshi-no-yu is mixed-gender, but from 20:00 to 22:00 it is reserved for women only. Chojyu-no-yu is a women-only bath. Gyokushiro-no-yu, made entirely of Japanese cypress, also has an outdoor bath.
