The easiest route is about 15 minutes by car from Hanaizumi IC on the Tohoku Expressway. It is also about 15 minutes by taxi from Hanaizumi Station on the JR Tohoku Main Line. Group bookings are taken by phone (0191-63-5660) or email.

In the herbivore area you can feed giraffes, zebras and llamas. At the petting area you can also meet small animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits.

You may drive in, but the animals can scratch cars and damage wing mirrors and door visors, and this is not covered. Note also that from December, weekdays are safari bus only, with private cars admitted at weekends, on public holidays and over the New Year period.

The safari bus comes with a guide's commentary, so you can learn about the animals as you watch them. Your own car lets you go at your own pace, but the animals come close and there is a risk of scratches to the bodywork.

Group visits must be booked in advance by phone (0191-63-5660) or email (info@iwate-safari.jp). Groups are generally accepted only on open days.

Allow about an hour to go round the safari area, or 2-3 hours including the petting area and Dobutsu Land. If you also want to feed the animals and try the various facilities, plan for half a day.

Adults (junior high school age and above) 2,900 yen and children (age 3 and over) 1,700 yen. The safari bus costs a further 800 yen for adults and 600 yen for children. You may also drive in, but damage to your car caused by the animals is not covered.
