Every room faces the Sea of Japan, so all of them look out to the horizon. The sunset, chosen as one of Japan's hundred best, is a magnificent sight, and the moment the sun goes down is something special.

When was the inn founded, and how big is it?
It is a small inn facing the Sea of Japan, founded in 1943. Among the large hotels of Yunohama Onsen, it stands out for its homely hospitality and relaxed interior where you can go barefoot.

What are the qualities of the hot spring?
We use 100 per cent source water from Yunohama Onsen with no added water, a sodium and calcium chloride spring (pH 7.9, source temperature 56 degrees Celsius). The baths alternate between men and women, and there is an open-air bath. The water warms you thoroughly.

How many baths are there?
There is Wata-no-Hara and a second bath, which alternate between men and women, so you can use a different bath on the day you arrive and the day you leave. There is also an open-air bath.

Are there sightseeing spots nearby?
The Kamo Aquarium, with its Guinness-recognised jellyfish display Cranetarium, is about 6 minutes away by car, and we offer plans that include admission. The inn is also convenient for Dewa Sanzan and the sights of Tsuruoka City.

What is the food like?
Our head chef, a certified Shonai coast food ambassador, serves kaiseki cuisine centred on seasonal seafood from the Sea of Japan. Dinner with fresh fish and a sea bream rice breakfast, all made with Shonai ingredients, are well received. A plan with Yamagata beef grilled on a ceramic plate is also available.

The dining room has been renovated to feel open, so that every seat looks out on the Sea of Japan and the sunset. You can enjoy the sea view and the seasonal flavours of Shonai at leisure.

About 25 minutes by taxi from JR Tsuruoka Station. About 40 minutes on a Shonai Kotsu bus bound for Yunohama Onsen (alight at the terminus, then about 3 minutes on foot). About 10 minutes by taxi from Shonai Airport.
