Who was Koizumi Yakumo (Lafcadio Hearn)?

He was an Irish writer born in Greece who came to Japan in 1890. He spent about a year and three months in Matsue, married Koizumi Setsu there and took Japanese nationality. He is known for works such as Kwaidan and Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan, which introduced Japanese culture and folklore to the world. This museum, open since 1934 with more than 80 years of history, tells the story of his life.

What are the admission and opening hours?

Admission is 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for elementary and junior high school students. Opening hours are 9:00-18:00 from April to September (entry until 17:30) and 9:00-17:00 from October to March (entry until 16:30). The museum is open all year.

What is on display?

As well as graphics and film presenting Hearn's life in chronological order, about 200 personal items are displayed, including manuscripts in his own hand, first editions, his desk and chair and his insect cage. In the retelling corner you can listen to the ghost stories of the San-in region as he retold them. The first floor has a library with many of his works and related books.

Can I visit the Lafcadio Hearn Residence too?

Yes. The Lafcadio Hearn Residence adjoins the museum. It is a samurai house built in the Edo period where Hearn and Setsu lived for five months, and from the living room you can see gardens on three sides at once, south, west and north. Separate admission applies (adults 400 yen, elementary and junior high school students 200 yen). We recommend seeing both.

What sights are there nearby?

The museum stands along Shiomi Nawate, north of Matsue Castle. Matsue Castle, the Matsue History Museum and the Horikawa moat cruise are all within walking distance, so you can walk the castle town at leisure.

How long does a visit take?

The museum alone takes about 45 minutes to an hour, or 1.5 to 2 hours including the residence. Adding a walk along Shiomi Nawate makes a half-day outing.

Is there parking?

The museum has no car park of its own. Please use a paid car park nearby, such as the Matsue-jo Otemae car park. Coming by bus is convenient (about 16 minutes from JR Matsue Station on the Gurutto Matsue Lake Line bus).

Is this also where Hearn gathered material for Kwaidan?

Yes. During his time in Matsue, Hearn collected folklore and ghost stories from the Izumo region, which fed into his later work. In the retelling corner of the museum you can listen to the San-in ghost stories as he retold them.

Is there a museum shop?

There is a museum shop selling Hearn's works (reprints and translations) and souvenirs.

Is the museum accessible?

Accessibility was improved in the 2016 renovation. Please see the official website or call for details.
