How do I get there from Tokyo?
About 80 minutes on the Joetsu Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa or Urasa Station, then about 40-60 minutes by bus or taxi. From Matsudai Station on the Hokuetsu Express you can use our pick-up service.

Are there activities?
There are activities through the seasons, including guided hikes in the Bijinbayashi beech wood and snowshoe tours in winter, letting you experience the nature of the hills at first hand.

How much snow falls in winter?
Matsunoyama Onsen lies in deep-snow country, and the snow can reach 3-5 m in winter. The open-air bath is especially popular as a snow-view bath, with a magical atmosphere as you bathe surrounded by snow.

Are there rooms with an open-air bath?
Yes, we have special rooms with their own hot spring open-air bath. There are 12 room types in all, from standard Japanese rooms and Japanese rooms with a sunken kotatsu to special rooms with an open-air bath.

What does it mean that Matsunoyama is one of the three great medicinal springs?
Matsunoyama Onsen is counted, along with Kusatsu and Arima, as one of Japan's three great medicinal hot springs. The water is said to be fossil seawater 12 million years old; it rises naturally at 97 degrees Celsius with a high salt content and is said to help with cuts, poor circulation and neuralgia.
Does the water flow continuously from the source?
Yes. Our open-air bath Tsukimi-no-Yu is fed continuously from the source with water 15 times more concentrated than that of Matsunoyama Onsen generally. The rich water is also said to benefit the skin.

Is there a pick-up service?
There are scheduled pick-ups from Matsudai Station on the Hokuetsu Express (please arrange in advance). Please see the official website or contact the inn directly for times and booking.

Do you use local ingredients?
We serve satoyama gottso kaiseki making generous use of local produce, including our own terraced-field Koshihikari rice (cooked over a rice-husk stove), mountain vegetables, Tsumari pork and Niigata wagyu.
What is the speciality dish Toji-buta?
It is our signature dish, Tsumari pork cooked in the 97-degree water of Matsunoyama Onsen. Born of the meeting between the hot spring and local produce, it is the centrepiece of our satoyama gottso kaiseki.

What is the Toji BAR?
The Toji BAR Matsunoyama Onsen, opposite the inn, serves local craft beer, sake and sherry (charged separately). It is popular with guests after a bath.
