What sort of shrine is Yaegaki Shrine, and what is it good for?
It enshrines the married deities Susanoo no Mikoto, known from the myth of slaying the eight-headed serpent, and Kushinadahime. It is said to bring matchmaking, marital harmony, good relationships and safe childbirth, and draws visitors from across Japan. The grounds are surrounded by the wooded Sakusame Forest.
What is the matchmaking divination at the Mirror Pond?
The Mirror Pond at the back of the grounds is a sacred pond where Kushinadahime is said to have drunk and seen her reflection while sheltering from the serpent. You float a special sheet of washi paper, place a 10-yen coin on it, and read your prospects from how quickly the paper sinks. The sooner it sinks (and the closer to the edge), the sooner the match is said to come.
What are the visiting hours and the shrine office hours?
The grounds can be visited at any hour. The shrine office, which gives out charms and goshuin seals, is open 9:00-17:00.
What is in the treasure hall?
It holds the painted wooden panels of six deities, said to have been painted in 893 by the court painter Kose no Kanaoka. They are a national Important Cultural Property and a valuable work depicting six deities including Susanoo no Mikoto, Kushinadahime and Amaterasu Omikami.
How do I get there from Matsue Station?
Take the municipal bus towards Yaegaki Shrine from JR Matsue Station, about 20 minutes, and the shrine is right by the Yaegaki Jinja stop. By car it is about 4 km south of Matsue Station.
Is there parking?
There is a car park next to the shrine. Please see the official website for the number of spaces.
What should I see in the grounds?
As well as the main hall (in taisha-zukuri style), there is the inner shrine and the Mirror Pond, the married cedars where two great cedars stand together, and the joined camellia, originally two trees grown into one. All are natural spots connected with matchmaking. The joined camellia is known to draw visitors from Shiseido, whose symbol is the camellia.
Can I get a goshuin seal?
Goshuin seals are given at the shrine office (9:00-17:00). There may be a wait in busy periods.
How does it differ from Izumo Taisha?
Izumo Taisha enshrines Okuninushi no Okami as its principal deity and ties all kinds of human connection. Yaegaki Shrine enshrines the married deities Susanoo no Mikoto and Kushinadahime and is known particularly for love, marital harmony and safe childbirth, making it popular with younger visitors hoping to meet the right person.
When is it busiest?
It is busy for the New Year visits from 1 to 3 January, around Valentine's Day, during the spring-to-autumn holiday weekends when more visitors come to pray for a match, and in Kamiarizuki (the tenth month of the old calendar, roughly November). Weekday mornings are relatively quiet.
